Energize Your Future Workshop @ Buffalo Museum of Science
May 13 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Powered by: NATIONAL GRID

Learn how to inspire students to pursue projects through challenges and the design of solutions using alternative energy, energy technology and environmental sustainability. You will leave with specific ideas on guiding students in their exploration of ideas as well as strategies for supporting their inquiry and design thinking.  A rubric for use in supporting student project work will be provided.

Use this workshop to prepare your students for WNY STEM Hub’s Energize Your Future competition powered by National Grid to be held during the 2019-20 school year. Students will submit a written proposal for their project. Winners will participate in a tradeshow style exhibit including a “Shark Tank” defense of their design. This is a high profile, high reward experience for youth that will connect them with the real world of energy!

Teachers can receive CTLE credits.  Youth advisors, parents, scout leaders and community members are encouraged to join the workshop.

Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens – Bonsai Show @ Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens
Jun 1 – Jun 2 all-day

The Buffalo Bonsai Society and the Buffalo Botanical Gardens proudly present the Bonsai Show June 1 and 2 from 10:00am-4:30pm.  Attendees will have the opportunity to talk with members of the Bonsai Society as they display amazing bonsai specimens from their personal collections. Trimming and shaping demonstrations on live trees will take place throughout the show. Visitors will also have the opportunity to purchase sculpted bonsai trees and plants, starter plants, accent plants and pots, as well as a raffle tickets for a chance to win bonsai baskets and merchandise.

Bonsai is a living art form which enables the hobbyist to transform conventional trees into a harmonious miniature representation of a mature tree in a small container. Since it involves a growing tree, the design is forever changing and evolving. Some of the techniques used to achieve this miniaturization and styling involve the pruning of roots and branches, defoliation of leaves and wiring the tree and its branches.

K-12 Science & Math Teacher Workshop – St. Bonaventure University @ Saint Bonaventure University
Jul 8 @ 9:00 am – Jul 11 @ 3:00 pm

July 8-11, 2019 / July 16 – Field Trip to Roswell Park

Understand your models – Integrate Computer Science into STE(A)M Lessons

St. Bonaventure University conducts an annual lab development workshop for K-12 math and science teachers each summer. Instructors are faculty from the university’s departments of biology, chemistry, physics, computer science and psychology.

The summer K–12 Science & Math Teacher Workshop has two goals:

  • To bring K-12 science teachers, school administrators and SBU science faculty together for a continuing discussion on bridging the gap between K-12 and college STEM education. Any challenges recognized from the discussion can lead to opportunities for networking and new partnerships between K-12 schools and SBU math and science departments and/or between K-12 schools for both short-term and long-term purposes.
  • To provide a hands-on experience for K-12 teachers to develop integrative lessons. These activities are designed to be transferable to K-12 classrooms to provoke student interests and increase their preparations in the STEM field that is in high demand.

New York State Continuing Teacher/Leader Education (CTLE) credits are provided by Cattaraugus/Allegany BOCES.
